Boost your confidence, fitness, and skills so that you can handle whatever comes your way!
Teens and adults come to our class for all sorts of reasons! Maybe you want to...
Increase your confidence!
Increase your fitness level!
Improve your mental health!
Be part of a supportive peer group!
Learn a traditional art!
Be able to defend yourself or others!
These classes give you all that and more!
Built around a traditional core of Chung Do Kwan TaeKwon-Do, we add a modern, laid-back, take which enables students to relax, leave the Outside World behind for awhile, and focus on building skills to take with them into the rest of their lives! We like to engage with students on a personal level, often include humor in class, and cultivate a comfortable atmosphere so long as work is being done! But we also understand that real accomplishment comes through hard work, and that doing that hard work is the foundation of real confidence and self-esteem!
Our instructors break down techniques piece-by-piece, and help you understand WHY a given technique is done the way it is, rather than just telling you to repeat it over and over. We believe that increased understanding helps our students be able to access their training when they need it!
TaeKwon-Do is great for increasing activity levels and overall fitness!
Whether you're 17 or 70, our classes let you engage at your current level and work towards your fitness goals. Saying "I'll wait to start training until I'm in better shape" is like saying "I'll wait until I'm smarter to start going to school!" It just doesn't work that way!
We understand that your body is different from everyone else's and that your TaeKwon-Do won't look exactly like what the person next to you in line is doing. And that's OK! Our classes are structured so that there is always an option for you where you are, and room for growth into what you want to be! As you get comfortable with what you've been doing, we'll give you ways to continue challenging yourself as your skill and ability increases! There is always a higher level to reach for, and we can help you get there!
A typical class can burn anywhere between 300-900 Calories, depending on how intensely you go at it, and regular martial arts training can help you increase your strength, stamina, and flexibility!
Build Confidence and Self-Esteem!
It's common for teens and adults to struggle with their mental health. School and work are stressful! We understand that and want you to be the best self you can!
Aside from the mental health benefits that come with being more physically active... which are considerable!... we conduct class in a positive and affirming manner, and prefer to highlight your improvements! Some people thrive when an instructor is screaming in their ear about how horrible they are... but that ain't us! We like to point out when you're succeeding, and give constructive criticism as gently as possible.
Our students learn self-motivation, build resilience and confidence, and know that what other people think of them doesn't matter as much as what they think of themselves!
A truth about self-defense: there is no one, perfect, technique that works 100% of the time against 100% of people. If there were, we'd teach nothing else!
But this means that mastery is a long process involving years of training, rather than hours or days.
Here's the good news: TaeKwon-Do classes are continuous! Someone who comes to class twice a week will be better able to look after themselves and stay safe than someone who went to one "Self-Defense" seminar six months ago! The process of building muscle memory through continuous repetition means that your instinct will often kick in before you even register an aggressive action!
Even though no skill set is infallible, martial arts students are generally better prepared for an unexpected encounter than non-martial-artists!
Build a better you!
"If there were a SINGLE jerk in this school... if there were ONE PERSON that I didn't feel safe training with... then I wouldn't be here."
That's what one student had to say about the people training at The Open Space!
The students and instructors in our classes are some of the most supportive, encouraging, people you will ever meet. They understand that we get better together, improve as a group, and that true strength involves lifting others up rather than keeping them down.
It's easy to be awesome when you're surrounded by awesome people!
